Held over three days, from February 21-23, the event featured vibrant cultural performances, insightful social awareness sessions, and dynamic literary discussions. Participants included community leaders, scholars, and dignitaries from various Indian states and Nepal.
The conference opened with the release of the Koch audio album ‘Sona Kocho,’ with vocals by Devpratim Koch and lyrics by Kandarpa Koch. On February 22, MKA President Jibananda Koch hoisted the association’s flag, followed by a tribute to the founding fathers of the organization. A significant session focused on social awareness, attracting active participation from organizations like the Meghalaya Koch Association, Koch Krorang Mathop (Koch Literature Society), Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union, and Meghalaya Koch Women Welfare Association. Several community members were honored for their contributions, including Ashish Koch (newly selected MCS), Rohesh Koch (NCC gold medalist), and Pranami Koch, filmmaker and director of Koro Gochongni.
During the conference, a newly selected MCS officer addressed the crowd, underscoring the importance of education within the Koch community. A souvenir titled ‘Champani’ was also released. The second session emphasized interregional collaboration, featuring representatives from Nepal, West Bengal, and Assam, aiming to strengthen ties among Koch communities across borders.
On the final day, the literary session brought together eminent scholars like Professor Bhabesh Koch from Karbi Anglong, Professor Jeuti Khamti from Mankachar College, and linguist Pranshu Munjal from Assam. They focused on the preservation and promotion of the Koch language, deemed endangered by experts, highlighting the urgent need for revitalization to preserve cultural identity.
Distinguished guests included Subir M. Marak, MLA of Rangsakona, and Chairman of the Meghalaya Khadi & Village Industries Board. The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to preserving culture, advancing education, and promoting community development within the Koch community.
