Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has openly criticized the Pakistan cricket team ahead of their crucial ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash against India, arguing that the host nation has prioritized infrastructure development over team strength. This decision, according to Kaneria, squandered an opportunity to defend their title effectively. The tournament, marking Pakistan’s first ICC home event in nearly three decades, got off to a shaky start with a 60-run loss to New Zealand in Karachi.
Kaneria’s criticism extends to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for controversial comments regarding India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan for the event. “They focused more on hosting than team building, creating unnecessary controversies about India’s participation,” Kaneria told IANS. He pointed out Pakistan’s lack of team cohesion and criticized the exclusion of essential players, such as Fakhar Zaman, whose return was prompted by a knee injury, leading to Imam-ul-Haq’s selection for the Dubai-bound squad following ICC Technical Committee’s approval.
Kaneria identified weaknesses in both batting and bowling, highlighting the absence of a quality spinner in the lineup. In their opener against New Zealand, Pakistan fielded only one specialist spinner, Abrar Ahmed, whom Kaneria described as average. He expressed concern over the bowling attack, specifically noting Shaheen Afridi’s reduced pace and Haris Rauf’s inconsistency, with potential to concede excessive runs.
As Pakistan prepares for their much-anticipated match against India on February 23 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Kaneria’s remarks underscore growing concerns about the team’s preparedness and strategic direction. With India recognized as a formidable opponent, Pakistan’s path forward in the tournament remains uncertain amidst these criticisms.
