Breaking News: NSCN-IM Boldly Launches New Battalion in NC Hills Amidst Assam Police’s Strong Denial
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) has announced the formation of a new battalion named ‘Eloi Hau’ in the ‘NC Hills’ region, now known as Dima Hasao. This development has stirred concern among security agencies. The announcement came from the group’s general headquarters on February 12, with military chief Anthony N Shimray reportedly exploring the Assam-Manipur-Nagaland tri-junction for the new base. The precise location remains contentious, with some suggesting it is in Laisong, a village claimed by both Assam and Nagaland; however, Assam Police denies it falls within state boundaries.
The creation of this base marks a significant move in the Naga Freedom Movement, as declared on an NSCN-IM banner. The battalion’s location is strategically significant, offering access to Naga areas in Myanmar and enhancing the outfit’s capacity against rival groups like the Manipur Zeliangrong United Front. Furthermore, the Rengma Nagar Hill Protection Force, previously involved in conflicts with Karbi groups, has reportedly merged with NSCN-IM, strengthening its influence in the area.
The introduction of this battalion could have serious implications for Assam, given the NSCN-IM’s objective of integrating Naga-inhabited regions across Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh into “Greater Nagalim.” The organization’s influence spans 7,000-8,000 members, organized into over ten battalions.
In parallel, a delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs, including North East advisor A K Mishra, visited Nagaland, meeting with the Naga National Political Groups and NSCN-IM leaders, including General Secretary Thuingaleng Muivah. Discussions are centered on longstanding demands, such as a separate national flag and constitution, which have stalled the peace process. The NSCN-IM has previously threatened to resume armed resistance if these demands are not addressed, despite its 2015 Framework Agreement with the Indian government.
