Assam Congress Slams Himanta Biswa Sarma for ‘Deceptive Statements’ in Assembly Uproar
The Congress accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of presenting inaccurate statements in the Assembly, particularly regarding the funding obligations of the Central government towards tribal areas. At a press conference, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia highlighted discrepancies in Sarma’s claims about the Centre’s financial responsibilities under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which governs the administration of tribal areas in several northeastern states, including Assam.
Saikia argued that the Central government is indeed obligated to provide funds for these regions, contrary to Sarma’s assertion in the Assembly that New Delhi has no such duty. He also addressed financial commitments related to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), detailing a special package worth Rs 1,500 crore as part of a 2020 peace accord. This package is to be shared equally by the Centre and the state over nine years. Despite this, Saikia alleged the Centre has not fully honored its commitment, causing the state to contribute its share as well.
Furthermore, Saikia called for transparency in BTR financial dealings, mentioning reports of corruption. He also refuted Sarma’s claim of being the first chief minister to repeatedly stay overnight at the BTR headquarters in Kokrajhar, pointing out it was established under a Congress government and has historically hosted visiting chief ministers.
Addressing concerns about the development of tea tribes, Saikia dismissed Sarma’s criticisms of Congress’s efforts, citing legislation for worker protection and improvements in education infrastructure during previous Congress administrations. He urged Sarma to prevent “misleading statements” in the Assembly to maintain credibility and accuracy in governance dialogue.
The discussion underscores ongoing political tensions in Assam and highlights the necessity for clear and truthful communication regarding government obligations and developmental commitments in tribal regions.
