Nagaland Receives Lifesaving Rs 170.99 Crore Boost for Disaster Relief: A Triumph of Resilience
Union Government Allocates Rs 170.99 Crore for Nagaland’s Disaster Relief
February 19: The Union Government, under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), has sanctioned Rs 170.99 crore to Nagaland as additional financial assistance following the catastrophic floods, flash floods, landslides, and cyclonic storms in 2024. This allocation is part of the larger Rs 1,554.99 crore aid package approved for five disaster-hit states, decided by a High-Level Committee chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In addition to Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh received Rs 608.08 crore, Odisha Rs 255.24 crore, Telangana Rs 231.75 crore, and Tripura Rs 288.93 crore. The funds, as per a press release from the Press Information Bureau, supplement those already distributed through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). However, states must first utilize 50% of their SDRF opening balance before accessing the NDRF aid.
Following these natural calamities, the Central Government promptly deployed Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) without awaiting formal requests from the states to assess the extent of damage and needs for recovery. The IMCT’s September 2024 visit to Nagaland involved assessing the destruction from incessant rains, particularly mudslides and landslides, impacting areas along National Highway-29, covering Pherima among other locations.
Detailed evaluations were conducted in Zunheboto, and district administrations in Tuensang, Shamator, and Noklak provided comprehensive briefings. Local District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) furnished in-depth reports on the monsoon-induced disasters, emphasizing the pressing need for financial and infrastructural support.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, the Central Government has significantly allocated disaster management funds across the nation, underlining its commitment to mitigating disaster impacts. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the initiative signifies robust federal support to assist states during natural adversities, reassuring citizens of swift governmental action in fortifying disaster-stricken regions.
