Unlocking Prosperity: Mizoram Governor Highlights Transformative Impact of ‘Banakaih’ Scheme on India’s Future
Mizoram Governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh, in his address at the state legislative assembly’s budget session, underscored the Mizoram government’s flagship ‘Banakaih’ scheme as a significant step toward achieving Viksit Bharat 2047 and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Launched on September 19, 2024, the Banakaih (Handholding) Scheme aims to offer financial aid to entrepreneurs and farmers through initiatives fostering inclusive growth and self-sufficiency. Featuring five key components, one notable feature is providing loans to eligible partners through banks, with the state government acting as guarantor. An agreement with State Bank of India, Mizoram Rural Bank, and Mizoram Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd. supports this effort. To further aid farmers, a Minimum Support Price (MSP) has been set for ginger, broom, turmeric, and Mizo bird-eye chili.
The governor praised Mizoram Police for maintaining the peace in 2024 and securing borders alongside forces like Assam Rifles. Agriculture remains a state priority, aiming to boost productivity through the FOCUS project, which is set to benefit 55,000 households via climate-resilient farming across several districts. Additionally, under the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm, 1,734 hectares were covered, producing significant yields for the fiscal year.
Efforts are also focused on ginger, turmeric, and Mizo chili cultivation under the state horticulture department, with promising expected yields. The governor highlighted these initiatives as pivotal for Mizoram’s economic and agricultural advancement, aligning with broader national and global sustainability agendas.
