Explosive Clash Erupts in Assam Assembly: Session Adjourned Three Times Amid Fierce Debate – Northeast News
The Assam Assembly experienced significant disturbances on Wednesday, marked by heated clashes between ruling and opposition members demanding discussions on various critical issues, resulting in three adjournments. The opposition introduced four adjournment motions concerning major issues: the Umrangso coal mine tragedy (highlighted by Congress), coal and other syndicates (raised by CPI(M)), alleged torture in a detention center (addressed by AIUDF), and the cash-for-job scam in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) brought up by Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi.
Concurrently, the ruling BJP-led alliance sought a debate on a recent report about the APSC cash-for-job scam. Post-Question Hour, pandemonium erupted as both sides thronged the House well, pressing for their demands. In an unusual development, BJP members of the ruling alliance chanted slogans and clapped within the well, urging the Speaker to allow discourse on the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission’s report on the APSC scam. Simultaneously, AIUDF members brandished placards seeking justice for alleged torture victims in detention centers.
Despite the opposition’s unified demand for the Speaker to accept their four notices, Speaker Biswajit Daimary rejected all five requests, recommending that the issues be raised through other means. He urged members to resume their seats, but continued protests led to the House’s first adjournment for 10 minutes. The session’s resumption saw persistent disorder. Speaker Daimary appealed for order, noting the day’s agenda focused on discussing the governor’s speech, offering no room for further debate. His plea went unheeded, necessitating a second 10-minute adjournment. After reconvening, ongoing turmoil forced a third adjournment, this time extending 20 minutes.
Following the third adjournment, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intervened, expressing the government’s openness to addressing all issues raised by the opposition, suggesting scheduled time adjustments within the month-long budget session for discussions. This assurance calmed both factions, allowing the Assembly to proceed with its scheduled business.
