Breaking News: Dynamic Vivek Joshi Takes Command as Election Commissioner, Ushering in a New Era of Accountability
Vivek Joshi assumed office as an Election Commissioner on February 18, following a notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice dated February 17, 2025. A veteran 1989-batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre, Joshi joins the Election Commission at a pivotal moment in India’s evolving electoral landscape.
In a parallel appointment, Gyanesh Kumar, an esteemed 1988-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, took the helm as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), succeeding Rajiv Kumar. In his inaugural address, Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the intrinsic role of voting in nation-building, urging all eligible citizens to participate actively in the democratic process. He stressed, “Voting is the foundation of nation-building. Every Indian above 18 should register and cast their vote,” underscoring the Election Commission’s dedication to upholding the Constitution and electoral integrity.
The new leadership team comprises Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, in addition to Gyanesh Kumar. Sandhu, a distinguished officer from the Uttarakhand cadre, rounds out the trio poised to supervise forthcoming electoral events.
Departing CEC Rajiv Kumar, India’s 25th to hold the position, delivered a heartfelt farewell, likening the Election Commission to a “place of worship of democracy.” Reflecting on his tenure, Kumar expressed confidence in the new leadership’s potential to further bolster the institution. “This building serves as a testament to 75 years of democratic heritage, crafted with immense dedication. The new team is well-equipped to elevate it further,” he remarked. He also highlighted the essential roles voters and political parties play in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.
Rajiv Kumar’s tenure, spanning from his appointment as Election Commissioner on September 1, 2020, to CEC on May 15, 2022, was marked by significant reforms across structural, technological, and administrative spheres, leaving a legacy of modernization and enhanced electoral processes.
