Discover the Astonishing Benefits of Sohlang-eit-ksew: Nagaland University’s Breakthrough Research on This Promising Natural Remedy
In a groundbreaking study, researchers from Nagaland University and collaborating institutions have unveiled the potential of a traditional Khasi medicinal plant, Viburnum simonsii, known locally as Sohlang-eit-ksew, as a promising natural remedy. Published in the Future Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, this research marks the first in-depth exploration of the plant’s bioactive compounds. Long used by the Khasi people of Meghalaya as a tonic and to alleviate spasms, Viburnum simonsii has now been scientifically validated for its potent antioxidant properties.
Laboratory tests demonstrated the plant’s ability to neutralize harmful free radicals, which are often linked to chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, suggesting its future role as a natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants. Additionally, the plant extract showed significant antimicrobial activity, effectively inhibiting gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, though not impacting gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or the fungus Candida albicans. These health benefits are attributed to bioactive compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic substances identified by the research team led by Samson Rosly Sangma and Mayur Mausoom Phukan.
The study identified 21 bioactive compounds in the fruit extract, with neophytadiene standing out for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. This discovery opens avenues for using Viburnum simonsii in developing new pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements. Researchers emphasize the need for further investigation, including advanced techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, to confirm compound structures and explore additional properties such as anticancer, antiviral, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects.
This research not only validates the traditional beliefs of the Khasi community but also presents an economic opportunity through sustainable cultivation and harvesting of the plant. As natural therapies gain popularity, Viburnum simonsii could become integral to both modern medicine and traditional healing practices in Meghalaya.
