COCOMI Urgently Appeals to Manipur Governor: Uniting Forces to Address State Crisis Now!
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has appealed to the Governor of Manipur for urgent intervention amid a severe political, social, and economic crisis. In their memorandum, COCOMI stressed the need for immediate restoration of law and order, democratic governance, and enhanced security measures.
COCOMI underscored the importance of clarifying Manipur’s constitutional status, urging the Governor to announce the government’s plan to stabilize the situation. The unrest, according to COCOMI, is driven by demands for a Separate Administration, a notion not endorsed by the Meetei community.
Key issues highlighted in the memorandum include the necessity for improved security and law enforcement, ensuring access to essential services, and countering armed movements. COCOMI criticized the Indian government’s Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, claiming it empowers Kuki armed groups in narco-terrorism. They advocated for increased action against opium cultivation in hill areas.
The committee demanded the swift establishment of an elected government and a comprehensive assembly session to address the crisis. Security for affected villages and their civilian defense forces, unblocking national highways, and preventing illegal extortion were also emphasized.
COCOMI called for the eviction of illegal settlements that jeopardize Manipur’s demographic and environmental balance and demanded a halt to unauthorized armed group movements and constructions in hill areas. The memorandum advocated for securing the Indo-Myanmar border with fencing to thwart infiltration and recommended implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to tackle demographic concerns.
Moreover, COCOMI urged for a review of the SoO pact, claiming that it aids foreign-origin Kuki leaders’ territorial ambitions. They proposed the formation of a dedicated Anti-Narco Terrorism Unit in the Northeast and demanded immediate relief and rehabilitation efforts for internally displaced persons.
Drawing attention to commitments from Northeast BJP leaders about preserving Manipur’s territorial integrity, COCOMI implored the Governor to act decisively and establish an elected government promptly.
