Urgent Warning: Unilateral Status Quo Shifts Threaten Indo-Pacific Stability – EAM Sounds Alarm
At the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the escalating tensions and disputes in the Indo-Pacific region, largely due to China’s assertive actions. He emphasized that while nations are increasingly asserting their interests, there are also concerns over unilateral changes to the status quo. The conference theme, ‘Voyage to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership,’ underscored the need for cooperative engagement in this strategically significant area.
Jaishankar noted that Indian Ocean countries are grappling with resource limitations and economic challenges as they strive to rebuild regional connectivity disrupted since the colonial era. A key issue is the monitoring and protection of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and fishing rights. Additionally, these nations are vulnerable to illegal trafficking and terrorism threats.
India, he said, is actively addressing these challenges by enhancing its maritime capabilities and forming alliances with neighboring countries across the Indian Ocean. India aims to provide leadership and take responsibility, especially in crisis situations, to maintain order and security in the region.
He also addressed the ongoing turmoil at the ocean’s extremes. In the Middle East/West Asia, existing conflicts pose a risk of further escalation, affecting global shipping routes and economies. Meanwhile, the Indo-Pacific region faces maritime tensions governed by international law and agreements. Jaishankar highlighted that adherence to such accords is vital for fostering stability and predictability.
Jaishankar’s comments underscore India’s commitment to ensuring maritime security and fostering cooperation in the Indian Ocean, emphasizing that collaborative efforts are essential for regional stability and progress. The conference provided a platform to discuss potential strategies and partnerships to navigate these maritime challenges effectively.
