Exciting Announcement: Assam Panchayat Elections Set for April, Declares Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah
Assam’s Minister of Public Health Engineering, Jayanta Malla Baruah, announced likely dates for the state’s panchayat elections during his visit to Barpeta. The elections are expected to be scheduled for April, following the conclusion of school examinations in March. Baruah addressed a gathering of BJP workers and supporters, discussing the party’s strategies for the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He expressed confidence in the BJP-led NDA’s aim to secure victory in 100 constituencies, including Barpeta and Bhabanipur–Sorbhog, referencing their performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
This announcement follows a recent development where the Gauhati High Court lifted a previous stay order on the panchayat elections. The stay was initially imposed due to pending litigations filed through nine writ petitions, but the Assam government successfully appealed against this ruling. A division bench granted permission for the elections to proceed, while the cases themselves will continue separately. This ruling follows an earlier decision by a single-judge bench on January 10 that had allowed elections in areas not affected by the litigations.
Baruah’s visit and announcements come amid heightened political activity as preparations begin in earnest for the panchayat and upcoming state assembly elections, with the BJP seeking to consolidate its presence and expand its influence across Assam.
