District-Level Watershed Yatra Unfolds in Mokokchung
MOKOKCHUNG, FEBRUARY 14 (MExN): The Department of Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, has launched a district-level watershed Yatra at Yimchalu Village Community Hall in Mokokchung on February 14. This initiative, aimed at enhancing awareness and community participation in watershed development and land conservation, began its journey in Kohima on February 5, arriving in Mokokchung on February 13.
The event was inaugurated by C Wati Walling, Chairman of Yimchalu Village Council, followed by a keynote by Sentinungla, District Project Officer for LRD. Sentinungla described the Yatra as a "pilgrimage" for raising awareness and prompted communities to adopt water conservation methods like trenches and tanks to prevent water scarcity-driven migration. District Commissioner Thsüvisie Phoji reinforced these sentiments with the Land and Water Conservation Pledge and highlighted that less than 50% of Mokokchung’s rural population engages in agriculture. He deliberated on whether the shift towards plantations hints at progress or environmental harm.
Phoji emphasized the strategic use of Mokokchung’s favorable climate and abundant water to mitigate water scarcity, urging unified community action. He applauded Yimchalu Village for its proactive stance and urged them to set a standard for other communities.
The event featured engaging activities, including a short play by Eden Academy’s Music & Drama Committee, knowledge sessions by Ruokuosietuo Dzüvichu and B. Imti Tzudir, and a folk dance by the Yimchalu Students Cultural Troupe. Competitions like painting with the theme "Save Trees, Save Earth," quizzes, and SHG product exhibitions were held.
Additionally, Shramdaan efforts focused on Coffee Bush Management at a plantation site. The event concluded with the Lokarpan Phase, where assets like the Watershed Structure and Water Reservoir Tank were handed over, marking a developmental milestone.
Parallel to this, a three-day watershed awareness campaign unfolded in Wokha, featuring conservation discussions and community-led Shramdaan activities at Lakhuti, Akuk, and Sanis. The campaign concluded with DPO Puthuto Natso’s handover formalities.
