Urgent Call for Change: DMCC Demands Amit Shah’s Resignation Amid Manipur Crisis
The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) has demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him accountable for the increasing law and order issues in Manipur. This call comes after reports surfaced indicating that Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned due to alleged pressure from Shah during a New Delhi meeting.
In a significant emergency assembly on February 9, the DMCC unanimously asserted that removing the Chief Minister would not suffice to restore peace in Manipur. The committee criticized the Union Government for supposedly appeasing Kuki militants, accusing it of exploiting these armed groups for geopolitical interests related to Burma and neglecting to address their alleged violations of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
The DMCC also accused Shah and the BJP leadership of seizing control of Manipur’s administration, rendering the state government powerless. The Peace Committee, announced by Amit Shah in June 2023, was criticized as ineffective by the DMCC, which argued it yielded no significant results. The committee further alleged that despite assurances from the Home Ministry, Kuki militants continued their assaults on Meetei villages, police stations, and government facilities.
Specific incidents, including attacks in Churachandpur and Kanglatongbi, highlighted the Home Ministry’s alleged inaction. The DMCC condemned the BJP-led central government for ignoring Manipur’s resolutions, such as the state’s cabinet decision in March 2023 to revoke the SoO agreement with the Kuki National Army (KNA) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA). Furthermore, a resolution passed by the Manipur Assembly in February 2024, calling for the complete annulment of the agreement with all Kuki-Zo militant groups, was reportedly disregarded by the Centre, which allegedly engaged in secret talks with the militants, exacerbating unrest.
Additionally, the DMCC voiced concerns over the unannounced removal of Manipur’s former Governor, involved in peace efforts, casting doubt on the Centre’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
