Urgent Shake-Up: Lai Council’s Executive Committee Dramatically Dissolved
The executive committee of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Aizawl, led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) C Lalmuanthanga from a coalition of the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress, has been disbanded following Lalmuanthanga’s resignation just before a scheduled no-confidence debate. During the council meeting, Chairman VL Hmuaka disclosed the resignation, which rendered the no-confidence motion unnecessary. This political shift paves the way for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizoram’s ruling party, to form the next executive committee with the backing of two MNF dissenters. The ZPM chose former CEM V Zirsanga, despite his past corruption conviction, as their leader, with Manghmunga Chinzah as deputy leader. Recently, Zirsanga and Lallawmsanga Apetow resigned from MNF. ZPM, which initially had 10 MDCs, now has the support of two MNF members and BJP member T Zakunga, making up a total of 13 MDCs. This development has led the governor to call for a floor test. In the December 4, 2020 elections, MNF won 20 out of 25 seats in the LADC, establishing V. Zirsanga as the CEM at that time.
