Exciting Launch: Instagram’s ‘Teen Accounts’ Revolutionize Online Safety in India!
Meta-owned Instagram has introduced “Teen Accounts” in India, aimed at creating a safer digital space for users under 16. This feature enhances privacy, content controls, and parental oversight to address concerns about teens’ online activities. Set to private by default, Teen Accounts require manual approval of follower requests and restrict interaction to approved followers. This setting extends to users under 18, limiting contact with strangers and exposure to sensitive content like violent videos or promotional cosmetic materials.
Instagram is rolling out these changes gradually, ensuring teens are tagged or mentioned only by people they follow and employing language filters in comments and messages. To promote better social media habits, the app encourages teens to take hourly breaks and offers a “Sleep Mode” from 10 PM to 7 AM, muting notifications and sending automatic replies.
Parents will soon have the ability to supervise teens over 16, monitoring conversations and setting screen time and usage limits. This initiative aligns with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which requires parental consent for minors, although India lacks legal restrictions on social media access for children under 16, unlike Australia.
By introducing Teen Accounts, Meta aims to strengthen privacy protections and uphold regulatory compliance, offering Indian teens a safer online experience.
