Unresolved Turmoil: Intense NDA Negotiations with Governor Amidst Manipur CM Crisis
Manipur is facing a leadership crisis following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. For the past three days, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s northeast in-charge, Sambit Patra, has been stationed in Imphal to facilitate a consensus on Singh’s successor. On Tuesday, an NDA delegation led by Patra met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan, though the meeting’s outcome was not disclosed at the time of reporting. Patra was joined by Manipur BJP president A Sharda Devi, minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh, and allies including NPF Manipur president Awangbou Newmai and JD(U) MLA Nasir.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has highlighted a potential constitutional crisis, as the legislative assembly has not convened for its mandatory session within the required six-month period, a stipulation under Article 174. Originally scheduled to start on February 12, the budget session was suspended by the governor on Sunday following Singh’s resignation. The last session concluded on August 12, 2024.
As discussions continue, potential candidates for Biren Singh’s replacement have emerged, including assembly speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, and ministers Yumnam Khemchand Singh and T Biswajit. The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders striving to resolve the leadership vacuum swiftly and maintain political stability in the region.
