Overcoming Adversity: Zunheboto Students Battle Travel and Accommodation Hurdles | MorungExpress Exclusive
Exams Begin Amidst Challenges for Zunheboto Students
Zunheboto, February 11: The Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations commenced today across the district of Zunheboto, mirroring the statewide schedule. Two centers in Zunheboto, the Olympic Higher Secondary School and the Government Higher Secondary School, have been designated for these exams. Notably, the participation of female students exceeds that of males in the district.
However, logistical hurdles are evident for students from surrounding sub-divisions such as Satakha, Akuluto, Naltoka, Suruhuto, and Asuluto. These students must travel to Zunheboto for their exams due to the lack of examination centers in their areas, which presents a significant challenge. Interviews conducted with these students reveal difficulties in adjusting to temporary living conditions, as many are staying with guardians, in hostels, or renting accommodations for the exam period.
One student from Satakha voiced concerns over the financial and emotional toll, stating, “It’s so hard to bear the expenses to appear for the board examinations, as we have to leave our comfortable homes and shift to a different location.” The added costs of travel and accommodation compound the existing pressure of the exams, forcing students to leave behind their usual support systems.
Teachers accompanying these students also face increased responsibilities, ensuring their well-being and adjustment to new environments. A teacher from Akuluto highlighted the emotional stress and financial burden on these students, emphasizing her role in helping them cope. She remarked, “It’s a difficult journey for these students. Not only do they have to adjust to a new place, but they also have to cope with emotional and financial stress.”
The absence of local examination centers raises concerns about the accessibility of education for students from remote areas. With added travel and accommodation expenses, the already demanding exam period becomes more challenging, underscoring the need for more accessible educational facilities in these sub-divisions.
