Arunachal Women’s Panel Demands Justice: Stand Against Influencer’s Racist Remarks
The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has lodged a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) against social media influencer Elvish Yadav, citing his “derogatory and racial” remarks about Chum Darang, an actor and ‘Bigg Boss 18’ finalist. In a letter, APSCW Chairperson Kenjum Pakam highlighted that Yadav’s comments, made in a viral video, insult Darang and demean women from Northeast India. Pakam stressed the broader impact of Yadav’s remarks, creating a sense of fear among Northeastern women in the Bollywood industry. She called upon the NCW to take immediate action and safeguard the sentiments of the community.
In response, Chum Darang took to Instagram, criticizing Yadav for his perceived mocking of her identity and accomplishments, including her work with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Darang made a call for differentiating between humor and hate.
In related developments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Guwahati police have filed an FIR against several YouTubers and influencers, including Ashish Chanchlani and Jaspreet Singh, for promoting obscenity in a show titled “India’s Got Latent.”
This move by the APSCW and the actions by Assam authorities underline growing concerns over online behavior and its repercussions on individual and community dignity, particularly in marginalized regions.
