Outrage as Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Panel Denounces ‘Racist’ Attacks on Actress Chum Darang – Northeast News

The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has vehemently denounced derogatory and racist remarks made by social media influencer Elvish Yadav about Chum Darang, a former Miss Arunachal and Bigg Boss participant. In a letter sent to the National Commission for Women, APSCW Chairperson Kenjum Pakam highlighted that Yadav’s comments not only insult Darang but also demean women from Northeast India.

The offensive remarks surfaced during a podcast with Bigg Boss 18 contestant Rajat Dalal, where Yadav made disparaging comments about Darang and fellow contestant Karan Veer Mehra. He suggested that Mehra’s interest in Darang was questionable and described Darang’s name as vulgar, referencing her role in the film Gangubai Kathiawadi.

In response to the public backlash, Dalal claimed the remarks were scripted and that Yadav was merely following instructions fed to him during the podcast. He attempted to defend Yadav by asserting that the influencer did not make the comments independently.

APSCW’s Pakam stressed the detrimental impact such offensive behavior has on women from the Northeast who are navigating careers in entertainment. She pointed out that these discriminatory remarks contribute to marginalizing individuals from the region and hindering their professional growth.

The women’s panel has called for stern legal action against Yadav, urging authorities to address the situation in accordance with the law. The commission reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the dignity and rights of women and advocated for stronger measures to combat racial and sexist discrimination across mainstream media and public platforms.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing racism and sexism in media, particularly against individuals from marginalized communities. APSCW’s stance serves as a call to action for stricter enforcement and greater awareness to foster a more inclusive and respectful environment within the entertainment industry.
