The governor of Russia’s Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko, has issued an emergency alert following the grounding of a Chinese cargo ship, the An Yang 2, off the island’s southwest coast. The vessel, carrying coal and heavy fuel oil, ran aground amid severe weather conditions, stranding it approximately 200 meters offshore in the Nevelsky district. Governor Limarenko assured in a Telegram post that there is currently no risk to the 20 crew members aboard and no fuel spillage has been recorded, though local authorities remain on standby for any potential emergency scenarios.

Efforts to reach the ship have been stymied by poor weather, complicating rescue operations and prompting authorities to prepare for the possibility of pumping fuel out of the vessel to prevent environmental damage. This incident echoes previous maritime oil spill events in Russia, such as a significant spill in the Kerch Strait earlier this year which required the mobilization of hundreds of volunteers for weeks to contain the damage.

Sakhalin, situated in Russia’s Far East, comprises an extensive island and the contentious Kuril Islands, which have been a point of territorial contention between Russia and Japan since World War II. The Soviet capture of these islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, has inhibited the signing of a peace treaty between the two nations.
