Shocking Twist: Manipur CM Biren Singh Abruptly Resigns on the Eve of Crucial Assembly Session

Imphal, February 9 (IANS): In a surprising political development in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation to Governor A.K. Bhalla on Sunday, just ahead of a critical Assembly session. Despite his resignation, Singh has been asked to remain in his role as caretaker Chief Minister by the Governor.

In his resignation letter to the Governor, Biren Singh expressed gratitude towards the Central government for its prompt actions and developmental efforts in the state. He emphasized the importance of continued support, highlighting key issues such as safeguarding Manipur’s territorial integrity, addressing border infiltration, deportation of illegal immigrants, and combating drug-related issues and narco-terrorism. Singh also mentioned the implementation of a revised mechanism for Foreigners Monitoring Registration (FMR) with stringent biometric applications and ongoing work to expedite border-related processes.

Biren Singh, 64, first assumed office as Manipur’s Chief Minister on March 15, 2017, after leading the BJP to its maiden electoral victory in the state. He retained leadership following the 2022 Assembly elections. However, his second term has been overshadowed by ethnic violence between the Meitis and Kuki-Zo communities, which began in May 2023.

A senior official from the Raj Bhavan confirmed that Singh, alongside ministers and key leaders, met with Governor Bhalla to submit his resignation. The Governor’s request for Singh to stay on as caretaker Chief Minister adds a further layer of intrigue to the situation.

Party insiders suggest that consultations are underway, with the BJP’s central leadership expected to announce a new leader soon. The unexpected resignation has caught both political and non-political circles off-guard, despite ongoing rumors about Singh stepping down under central leaders’ directives. During the meeting with the Governor, Singh was accompanied by Sambit Patra, the BJP’s northeast in-charge, state BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, and other political figures.
