President Daniel Noboa, seeking re-election, initiated the border shutdown on Monday in reaction to alleged destabilization attempts by armed groups. In addition to the border closure, Noboa has mandated increased security measures across the nation’s land borders. This includes enhanced patrols at ports and rivers, and stringent aerial surveillance over airports and private airstrips.
The Ecuadorian Armed Forces have started implementing these orders, conducting nationwide military operations aimed at maintaining national security and sovereignty. They confirmed these actions on social media earlier this week.
On Sunday, over 13.7 million Ecuadorians are eligible to participate in the elections, where they will vote for a president, vice president, 151 National Assembly members, and five representatives to the Andean Parliament, all serving a four-year term.
As part of the election process, Ecuador entered a mandated pre-election silence period starting Friday, allowing voters a quiet time to contemplate their choices before casting their ballots.
