Exciting Leap to a Greener Future: NFR Launches Electric Trains in Southern Assam and Tripura!
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making significant progress towards initiating electric train services in southern Assam and Tripura, officials announced on Friday. A major step was achieved with the successful trial run of an electric goods train between Badarpur station in Assam and Jirania station in Tripura. Following the completion of necessary infrastructural work, further trials with electric locomotives will lead to the introduction of electric passenger trains on this route within the next month or two.
This advancement comes as part of a Rs 46 crore electrification project launched in 2022, aimed at linking Tripura to India’s national railway grid through electric trains. Currently, Tripura is connected to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai by diesel-powered trains. The shift to electric locomotives is expected to enhance transport efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
As a noteworthy development in regional transportation, this electrification reflects ongoing efforts to modernize railway infrastructure and improve connectivity in Northeast India.
