Empowering Hope: Inspiring Jathas and Awareness Programmes Unite for World Cancer Day
On Tuesday, the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Bengaluru organized an awareness jatha in observance of World Cancer Day. The event featured a march from the hospital to Lalbagh, led by actor Vasishtha Simha and Naveen Bhat Y., the State Mission Director for the National Health Mission. Approximately 500 participants, including doctors, nurses, medical students, and the institute’s in-charge director, Naveen T., took part, holding placards with messages such as “Early detection prevents cancer.”
Dr. Bhat emphasized the importance of early cancer detection through regular screenings, vaccinations, and healthy lifestyle choices, noting that the State government supports diagnosis and treatment with advanced equipment and skilled staff at the Kidwai institute. Actor Vasishtha Simha also highlighted the significance of early detection in alleviating anxiety associated with cancer diagnosis.
Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) organized a rally in Bengaluru to mark World Cancer Day. IMA’s Bengaluru president, Vijayanand, pointed out that some cancers, particularly those spread by viruses, could be prevented with vaccines, while others can be managed by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding smoking, alcohol, and tobacco. The rally saw participation from over 200 individuals, including staff from Regal Hospital and Dasappa Memorial Institute of Oncology, who raised slogans to promote cancer awareness.
