Meghalaya Government’s Bold Move: Championing Shillong as India’s Thriving Football Capital, Declares NEUFC CEO
The Indian Super League (ISL) is poised to debut in Meghalaya as NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) takes on Mumbai City FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on February 7. This pivotal event underscores Shillong’s emerging status as a football stronghold. Additional matches are slated against Bengaluru FC on February 21 and East Bengal FC on March 8, featuring prominent stars like Sunil Chhetri, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Naorem Mahesh Singh, much to the delight of football enthusiasts statewide.
NEUFC CEO Mandar Tamhane recognized the region’s passionate football culture ahead of the inaugural match. He cited the enthusiastic response during a previous Durand Cup semi-final against Shillong Lajong, where tickets sold out rapidly and fan parks were filled to capacity. Tamhane credited the Meghalaya government’s support as essential in relocating ISL matches to Shillong and aligning with the goal of establishing the city as India’s football capital.
Local hero Redeem Tlang, a NEUFC forward, expressed excitement over the opportunity to play the league in his hometown. With over 100 ISL matches under his belt, Tlang emphasized the significance of this development for Meghalaya’s football scene. He reminisced about his early days with Shillong Lajong FC and noted the deep-rooted football tradition in the area. Tlang urged fans to rally behind the team, emphasizing football’s cultural importance in Shillong.
In addition to bringing high-caliber matches to the region, the ISL’s presence is expected to inspire young footballers by providing firsthand exposure to top-tier football, a privilege previous generations lacked. This development is anticipated to bolster grassroots programs and stimulate the sport’s growth in Meghalaya and beyond.
As anticipation mounts among local fans, the ISL’s arrival in Shillong signifies an exciting chapter that celebrates the city’s fervor for football and fortifies its reputation as a significant player in Indian football.
