Empowering Futures: Transformative Embroidery Workshop for Sustainable Livelihoods in Meghalaya
The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College for Skill Development in Wahiajer, an affiliate of North-Eastern Hill University, recently concluded a six-day embroidery training workshop aimed at equipping local youth with vital vocational skills. Held from January 29 to February 4, the workshop in Jaintia Hills focused on empowering participants for economic independence and sustainable livelihoods. Artisans from diverse community groups received hands-on training, which included practical demonstrations and interactive sessions, enhancing their abilities in cutting, stitching, and using various trimmings in handmade embroidery.
Resource persons highlighted embroidery as a significant part of India’s cultural heritage, urging attendees to pursue it both as a hobby and profession. They emphasized the importance of hard work, cultural appreciation, and self-reliance. This initiative aligns with DDUCC and NEHU’s commitment to promoting vocational education and skill development, in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 and the vision of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
Participants received certificates upon completion of the training, further encouraging the community to utilize these skills to earn their livelihood amidst challenging circumstances. The college has received positive feedback for its efforts to support community members in need, promoting economic empowerment through skill development.
