Passionate Plea in Parliament: Empowering Sikkim through Education, Organic Farming, and Tribal Rights
During a joint session of Parliament, Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba endorsed the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, emphasizing critical state issues as Sikkim approaches 50 years since its inclusion in India. Subba lauded the President for her address and reflected on Sikkim’s significant journey since its 1975 merger, underlined by Article 371F, which safeguards Sikkimese rights. He stressed the necessity for this protection to persist.
Highlighting education as pivotal for regional development, Subba noted Sikkim’s rise in literacy rates and the establishment of a Central University and an NIT. However, he expressed concern over the lack of inclusion of Sikkim’s institutions in scientific advancements, such as nuclear and space missions. Subba called on the government to involve Sikkim in future projects, particularly quantum and nuclear research.
Advocating for Sikkim’s renowned organic farming, Subba urged further support to establish the state as a hub for organic food processing, thereby bolstering local farmers and the economy. On social matters, he emphasized the need for recognizing the rights of Sikkim’s diverse communities. While tribal status was granted to Bhutia and Lepcha communities at the time of the merger, and to Limboo and Tamang in 2003, 12 communities still await this recognition. Subba strongly pressed for extending tribal status to these communities and for reserving Assembly seats for the Limboo and Tamang.
Subba praised the ‘Make in India’ initiative and highlighted the importance of maintaining NH-10, a critical highway linking Sikkim to Siliguri, as essential for connectivity and economic growth.
In his address, Subba effectively captured the myriad challenges and opportunities facing Sikkim, urging the government to bolster infrastructure, education, and social justice for the state’s continued advancement.
