Aohali Village: Arunachal Pradesh’s Pioneering Zero Hunting Village
Aohali village in East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, has made headlines by becoming the first ‘zero hunting village’ in the state. The initiative, spearheaded by local MLA Oken Tayeng, was officially recognized with the inauguration of a welcome gate reading ‘Aohali – Zero Hunting Village,’ officiated by the home minister’s adviser, Mutchu Mithi, on February 3rd.
Rooted in a vision for ecological conservation and sustainable development, the decision to cease hunting marks a significant cultural shift for the Idu-Mishmi tribe, a community for whom hunting has historically been integral. This bold move is driven by the growing concerns over biodiversity loss and ecological imbalance.
The zero hunting initiative fits within a broader strategy to preserve nature, protect wildlife, and incorporate sustainable practices into the community’s lifestyle. The ceremony was also attended by MLAs Tapi Darang and Oni Panyang, demonstrating political support for the Eco Clean Mebo Mission under which this landmark decision was taken. Aohali’s shift to a zero hunting policy sets a precedent in Arunachal Pradesh, offering a model of how traditional communities can pivot towards sustainable development while honoring their cultural heritage.
