Transformative Budget Boost: Empowering Cancer Patients with Financial Relief and Enhanced Care
Cancer Care to Improve with New Union Budget Measures
New Delhi, February 3 (IANS): The recent announcements in the Union Budget are set to ease the financial strain on cancer patients while enhancing the quality of care, as highlighted by Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, includes significant provisions aimed at cancer treatment advancements across India.
Key among these measures is the establishment of 200 cancer day-care centres by 2025-26, ensuring easier access to crucial chemotherapy treatments. “These centres are vital for providing chemotherapy, an essential component of cancer treatment,” Dr. Gupta emphasized. The availability of day-care centres is expected to benefit patients significantly, especially those who currently travel vast distances, disrupting their lives and livelihoods.
Additionally, the budget introduced tax relief measures for 36 lifesaving drugs, including those used in cancer treatment, and announced exemptions on basic customs duty for essential medical equipment. Dr. Gupta applauded these measures, noting that they will likely alleviate the financial burden of expensive cancer medications. The move to cut costs on medical equipment is also expected to reduce the capital investment needed for healthcare facilities, both private and public, ultimately benefiting patients.
Ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4, Dr. Gupta urged the public not to fear cancer. He reminded citizens that early detection significantly increases the chances of recovery and encouraged consultations with doctors if symptoms appear. “If the cancer is in the first or second stage, the recovery chances are much higher,” he advised.
Overall, the Union Budget’s healthcare provisions promise a positive shift toward more accessible and affordable cancer care, offering hope to many patients across the nation.
