Passionate Protest: Tripura College Students Shine Light on Bangladesh Unrest Over Saraswati Puja Pandal
Students at Bir Bikram Memorial College (BBMC) in Agartala have crafted a poignant themed pandal to draw attention to the recent unrest in Bangladesh. Their installation graphically depicts the alleged destruction, such as burning libraries, statues, and various structures, aiming to shed light on the turbulent situation in their neighboring country.
Through this artistic endeavor, the students intend to raise awareness and encourage dialogues about the impact of such incidents on cultural heritage and societal dynamics. The pandal features imagery of books ablaze, libraries engulfed in flames, and a representation of the Central Shaheed Minar, a prominent national monument in Dhaka, skillfully crafted from thermocol sheets.
Pritam Das, a fifth-semester student at BBMC, explained that the college took a unique thematic approach for this year’s Saraswati Puja celebration. “We are all aware of the events transpiring in Bangladesh through social media and news. Seeing libraries set on fire and statues destroyed is alarming. Burning a library is equivalent to destroying knowledge, which we cannot condone. Our intention is to send a clear message against such destruction and ensure it doesn’t happen in our own country. Despite facing some opposition, others have appreciated our theme. We hope Maa Saraswati’s blessings will bring peace and prosperity globally,” he stated.
Tripura, sharing an 856 km semi-porous international border with Bangladesh, experiences the ripple effects of such regional disturbances. The students’ initiative has sparked both support and criticism, highlighting the sensitive nature of the issues depicted. Nevertheless, their project aspires to foster understanding and compassion through artistic expression, serving as a powerful reminder of the significance of preserving cultural heritage in times of crisis.
