Meghalaya CM Boldly Rejects Uniform Civil Code: A Visionary Stand for Cultural Diversity
The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not take place in Meghalaya, announced the state’s BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed that the UCC is not part of the state’s agenda, emphasizing the need to preserve Meghalaya’s secular nature and the unique identities of its various tribal communities. Sangma argued that a uniform code may not suit India due to its vast cultural and traditional diversity. He further stressed that any legislation should be adopted based on its relevance and benefits to the state in question.
In contrast, Assam’s Chief Minister has reported no opposition to the UCC within his state. He discouraged targeting any community, noting that modern practices among Muslims in Assam do not involve polygamy. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand made headlines on January 27 as the first Indian state to implement the UCC.
This development highlights differing views and approaches on the UCC across the Indian states, reflecting the complexities involved in seeking a balance between uniformity and cultural diversity.
