Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has concurred with the New South Wales (NSW) police’s assessment that the discovery of a caravan loaded with explosives in Sydney constitutes an act of terrorism. This stance aligns with NSW Premier Chris Minns, who identified the January 19 incident as a terror-related threat, potentially targeting the Jewish community.

The caravan was discovered in Dural, a suburb located approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s center, according to Xinhua news agency. NSW Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson revealed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine whether the explosives were meant for an antisemitic attack, potentially inflicting mass casualties.

While the police have not formally classified the incident as terrorism, counter-terrorism teams are actively investigating. The caravan’s owner, apprehended as part of a wider investigation into hate crimes, was already in police custody when the explosives were found. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb assured the public that the risk has been mitigated since there was no detonator found in the caravan and the suspect is no longer a threat.

Authorities have been tight-lipped about the details, maintaining silence for ten days after the discovery to thoroughly examine available evidence. Over 100 officers from various agencies are involved in the investigation, highlighting the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case. Both Webb and Minns emphasized that keeping the discovery confidential initially was a strategic decision to bolster their investigative process.

Albanese underscored the importance of remaining vigilant, stating the situation was intended to incite fear and cause harm. Premier Minns assured that every effort would be made to unravel the plot, asserting that investigators would pursue every lead without restraint.
