Exciting Boost for Defense: India Approves Rs 10,200 Crore Investment in Indigenous Pinaka Rocket Ammunition
The Cabinet Committee on Security has sanctioned the indigenous procurement of ammunition valued at approximately Rs 10,200 crore for the Indian Army’s Pinaka multi-launcher rocket system, expanding India’s self-sufficiency in Defence manufacturing. Officials announced two key deals: one for high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition priced at Rs 5,700 crore, boasting a 45 km range, and another for area denial munitions at Rs 4,500 crore, effective over 37 km with capabilities against tanks and personnel. This procurement will be split between Munitions India Limited, established from the Ordnance Factory Board’s corporatisation, and a private sector company.
Simultaneously, the Defence Ministry has sealed a Rs 1,561-crore contract with Chennai’s Heavy Vehicles Factory to furnish 47 T-72 bridge laying tanks for rapid mechanised force deployment, part of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited’s production. Earlier, on January 16, the Ministry secured a Rs 2,960-crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited for medium-range surface-to-air missiles for the Navy, marking significant advancement in India’s Defence capabilities and indigenisation of military technology.
India’s Defence sector has achieved an annual production exceeding Rs 1.25 lakh crore, exporting to over 100 countries. The Defence Ministry has set a Rs 50,000 crore target for exports, highlighting its commitment to strengthening and advancing the nation’s Defence infrastructure.
