Dibrugarh’s Groundbreaking Geo Bag Project: A Bold Solution to Combat Devastating Erosion
State power minister and Dibrugarh MLA, Prasanta Phukan, has initiated a geo bag installation project to combat river erosion along the Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh. This ambitious project, targeted at a 1.7km stretch in the Nagaghuli area near Dibrugarh town, aims to safeguard local communities from the persistent threat of erosion. The project commenced with the strategic deployment of geo bags, filled with sand and river silt, near the Mothola tea estate. These bags, crafted from a durable mix of woven polyester and polypropylene, are positioned using boats along the vulnerable riverbank to form a protective barrier.
Phukan emphasized the urgency of completing the project within 45 days, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, which usually intensifies the river’s erosive power. The modern geo bag approach presents significant advantages over traditional methods, functioning as resistance walls that effectively divert floodwaters while fostering natural vegetation growth, thus supporting local biodiversity.
For the residents of Nagaghuli, primarily cultivators and tea workers, this project offers a much-needed respite after years of witnessing their lands, homes, and livelihoods being consumed by the relentless Brahmaputra. The initiative has ignited hope among the community, with residents like Haren Bhumij from the Mothola tea estate expressing optimism about finally having a viable solution to preserve their properties and livelihoods.
