Exciting Developments in Meghalaya: Strict Model Code Unleashed Ahead of Pivotal Khasi Hills Council Polls
Ahead of the 2025 Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections, the District Magistrate of Ri Bhoi has enacted stringent measures to ensure peaceful and fair polling. In a decisive move, the carrying of cash exceeding Rs 50,000 or valuable metals without proper documentation has been banned throughout the district. The display of election-related materials such as posters, banners, and hoardings on public property now requires explicit permission from relevant authorities.
A district-wide weapons ban is in effect until the election concludes. Licensed firearms holders are required to surrender their arms at the nearest police station within 14 days, accompanied by their permits. Exemptions are made for law enforcement personnel, including police, BSF, and forest officials.
Enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, these regulations warn of prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 for any violations, in addition to other applicable laws.
These steps are in line with the Model Code of Conduct, which is now in force and will remain active throughout the electoral process. Political parties, candidates, and their agents are required to comply strictly with these guidelines to avoid legal repercussions.
By imposing these restrictions, the authorities aim to create a secure and transparent electoral environment, safeguarding the democratic process in the region. As the elections approach, these measures reflect the commitment to upholding law and order, ensuring that the electoral activities proceed smoothly and without disruption. The public and political entities are urged to cooperate fully with the regulations to maintain peace and integrity during this pivotal political event.
