Sunita Williams’ Emotional Journey: Rediscovering the Joy of Walking After 237 Days in Space
New Delhi, January 29 (IANS) – Indian-Origin astronaut Sunita Williams has been stranded in space for 237 days, making the long journey on the International Space Station (ISS become a challenging reality. During a conversation with students from Needham High School in the U.S., she candidly shared her experience, admitting she is attempting to recall the sensation of walking after so many months without setting foot on solid ground.
Williams, 59, along with fellow NASA astronaut Butch Willmore, was scheduled for an eight-day mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner in June 2024. However, a declaration by NASA deeming the Starliner unfit for human travel extended their stay on the ISS to over 10 months. The astronauts are now expected to return to Earth in March aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule, marking the resolution of an unexpected chapter in space exploration.
Williams, who has spent a total of 322 days in space across two missions, recounted the surreal experience of living in orbit, noting the absence of basic physical experiences such as walking, sitting, or lying down. Her remarks underscore the unique challenges long-term space travelers face as they adjust to life without gravity.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he had been requested by U.S. President Donald Trump to expedite the return of Williams and Wilmore. Musk expressed dismay at their prolonged stay, stating that SpaceX intends to prioritize their safe return as part of its Crew-9 mission.
Despite the ordeal, Williams is set to conduct another spacewalk on Thursday—her second in 12 years. With 50 hours and 40 minutes of cumulative spacewalking time, she holds the second-highest record for female astronauts, further solidifying her remarkable legacy in space exploration even as she faces the challenges of prolonged space habitation.
