Stadium Showdown: Government Faces Dilemma Over JN Stadium’s Electrifying Future!
SHILLONG, Jan 28: The question of whether Shillong’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium should exclusively host high-stakes football matches or accommodate international rock concerts is posing a significant challenge for the Meghalaya government. Recently renovated at an expense exceeding Rs 50 crore, the stadium garnered acclaim for its modern amenities during the renowned Durand Cup. However, concerns have arisen regarding the condition of its turf following damage during a Bryan Adams concert on December 10 last year.
Despite measures to protect the grass, a section of the field was compromised due to a 5,000-litre water tank at the event, leaving the pitch in poor shape. Efforts to rehabilitate the damaged turf, including re-seeding and fertilization, have been initiated, but the area is yet to fully recover, prompting doubts about its suitability for upcoming events.
A pressing issue is the conflict in scheduling two major events at the stadium. The Indian Super League (ISL) is slated to debut in Shillong with NorthEast United FC set to play against Mumbai City FC on February 7, followed just five days later by a concert featuring British singer Ed Sheeran on February 12. This situation is aggravated by the stadium’s role in hosting two international football matches in March— an AFC Asian Cup qualifier between India and Bangladesh on March 25, preceded by a match against the Maldives around March 19 or 20.
The state government is entangled in a quandary— ensuring the venue accommodates a substantial musical gathering while safeguarding the field for critical football matches. Absent an alternative site for entertainment events, the JN Stadium must serve dual purposes, spurring debate about the long-term feasibility of this model. With considerable public investment at stake, the sustainability of using the JN Stadium for both sports and concerts remains a pressing concern for Meghalaya.
