Radio 2 Breakfast Presenter Overwhelmed with Joy: A Powerful First Show Debut
Scott Mills made a heartfelt debut as the host of BBC Radio 2’s breakfast show on Monday, expressing feelings of being “really overwhelmed” while ushering in listeners. Succeeding Zoe Ball, who left the show in December after a six-year stint, Mills opened his first show with Robbie Williams’ “Rock DJ,” much to the delight of the audience.
Starting his journey with the BBC 25 years ago, Mills, who moved over from Radio 1 last year to fill Steve Wright’s afternoon slot, is now stepping into one of the most prestigious roles in radio broadcasting, following legendary hosts like Chris Evans and Terry Wogan. He described his new position as somewhat surreal, noting his lifelong passion for radio and the legacy of the slot.
In his introductory message, Mills humorously referenced a previous remark where he vowed never to take on a breakfast show. Yet, embracing the challenge, he aims to create a welcoming and uplifting experience for listeners each morning. The show features familiar voices such as travel presenter Ellie Brennan and newsreader Tina Daheley, who has previously worked with notable names like Chris Moyles and Nick Grimshaw.
Mills’ fresh energy is part of Radio 2’s revamped line-up, reflecting a shift with many DJs migrating from Radio 1, including Vernon Kay, now hosting the mid-morning slot. However, not all former Radio 1 talents have followed this path, with Chris Moyles now at Radio X and Nick Grimshaw at BBC Radio 6 Music.
Mills’ debut show saw special contributions from celebrities including Davina McCall and former host Ball, who sent him voice notes of encouragement. Robbie Williams thanked Mills for choosing his track to launch the show. The debut was peppered with an eclectic mix of tunes from iconic artists like Whitney Houston and Madonna, holding the promise of a lively and varied musical journey for listeners each morning.
