The fate of the vast fortune of the late Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan remains uncertain, as his son and sole heir, Ven Ajahn Siripanyo, has chosen a monastic life over his multi-billion-dollar inheritance. Ananda Krishnan, affectionately known as A.K., passed away in November last year, leaving behind a business empire valued at approximately $5.1 billion. He was the wealthiest Indian-origin individual and the sixth richest person in Malaysia at the time of his death.
Ven Ajahn Siripanyo, born to Ananda and his first wife, Chakraban, Momwajarongse Suprinda Chakraban, became a monk at 18. Initially a temporary decision during a visit to Thailand, Siripanyo fully embraced monastic life and now serves as the abbot of the Dtao Dum Monastery near the Thailand-Myanmar border. Raised in London alongside his two sisters, he is fluent in eight languages, including English, Tamil, and Thai.
Siripanyo’s decision to pursue a spiritual path means that the future of Krishnan’s substantial wealth is left in question. Besides being the heir to a significant business empire, Siripanyo has royal ties through his mother, a Thai princess. Despite his monastic life, he maintained a cordial relationship with his father until the latter’s passing.
Ananda Krishnan made his fortune in the mid-80s and early 90s by establishing a multimedia empire. He gained initial recognition in the entertainment industry through the Live Aid concert with Bob Geldof. Krishnan later forayed into oil trading and gambling, before building his telecommunications empire, which included Maxis Communications and satellite broadcaster Astro Malaysia. His wealth largely stemmed from stakes in these major companies, as well as international investments in providers like Aircel in India and SLTMobitel in Sri Lanka.
