Aizawl, January 26: Renthlei Lalrawna has emerged as a beacon of literary transformation in Mizoram, blending global narratives with regional flair. Lalrawna first dabbled in translation with "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp" during his eighth-grade days, later expanding his repertoire to include "Alibaba and the Forty Thieves" and "Sinbad the Sailor." It was through these Arabian Nights classics that he discovered his passion for the art of translation. Recognized today with a prestigious Padma Award for 2025, Lalrawna reflects on how these initial projects ignited his commitment to bringing world literature to the Mizo audience.

Following his time in higher education, Lalrawna’s enthusiasm for translation saw him tackling Shakespearean works such as "Macbeth" and "Julius Caesar." Over his distinguished career, he has translated 15 books, notably earning accolades for his translation of "David," a tribute to his late father, which received the "Best Translation of the Year" from the Mizo Writers’ Association.

Born on December 22, 1944, in the Dawn village of Mizoram’s Lunglei district, Lalrawna graduated from Aizawl College, now known as Pachhunga University College. His career in the Education Department saw him rise from Assistant Publication Officer to Joint Director of the Adult Education wing, significantly contributing to Mizoram’s advancement to second place in national literacy rankings.

Retiring in 2003, Lalrawna continues to influence Mizo literature with his compilations of hymns and mourning songs widely cherished across the state. He urges Mizoram’s youth to pursue translation, emphasizing its crucial role in enriching regional literature.
