The 76th Republic Day was marked with pomp and grandeur in Barpeta, Assam, spotlighting the spirit of unity and development. The main event took place at the Municipality Ground, celebrating the adoption of the Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950. Spearheading the central ceremony was Nandita Garlosa, the Cabinet Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, accompanied by key officials such as the District Commissioner and Additional District Commissioners.
The day commenced with Garlosa paying tribute to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi situated near the Barpeta Municipal Board Office, alongside other dignitaries. She then took the stage at the Municipality Playground, where she addressed a large audience to discuss Assam’s efforts for holistic development. Garlosa emphasized how these initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. Praising Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration, she highlighted the significant progress achieved in Barpeta regarding governance and public services. The dedication of the Barpeta district administration in enhancing governance for public benefit was also acknowledged.
The Republic Day celebrations featured an array of performances, including a parade with school students and various departmental presentations illustrating pivotal social and developmental themes. Awards were distributed to the best performers in the parade and tableau displays, fostering a spirit of competition and excellence. Cultural performances, including street plays by local artists, were staged to raise awareness on contemporary issues, adding vibrancy to the celebrations.
The day concluded with a friendly cricket match between the Barpeta District Commissioner’s XI and the Press Club of Barpeta XI. The match, held at the Municipality Ground, ended thrillingly with the Press Club XI securing victory by 7 runs. The Republic Day events underscored Barpeta’s commitment to community engagement, development, and the celebration of national unity.
