Shocking Discovery: 8 Bangladeshi Infiltrators Captured by Heroic Meghalaya Police at Hallidayganj
Tura, Jan 24: In a significant operation, Meghalaya Police intercepted an illegal entry attempt by eight Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, near Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills district. Acting on intelligence regarding unauthorized border crossings through the Dalu area, police successfully apprehended the group this morning.
The arrested individuals were identified as Pappu Sheikh (27), Alif Mal (39), Masirul Ojha (18), Arif Sheikh (37), Maherul Khan (19), Alif Mondol (35), Dalia Ojha, and Ms Jhorina. Residents of Mitapukur and Sabar (Habra) in Bangladesh, they have been charged under the Foreigners Act and Passport Act for illegal infiltration into India.
In an unusual turn of events, the group was found transporting two live snakes in their vehicle, intriguing both the police and wildlife authorities. The reptiles were subsequently handed over to the Wildlife Department for further handling.
This incident underscores ongoing challenges in managing the porous 400 km-long India-Bangladesh border, where despite vigilance by police and the Border Security Force (BSF), some sections remain unfenced, allowing for clandestine crossings. Such efforts have been increasing over the past six months, highlighting the need for more robust measures to prevent unauthorized entry and ensure border security.
This arrest reflects law enforcement’s continued commitment to averting illegal immigration, as authorities remain vigilant to maintain the integrity of the national border. The case exemplifies the broader issue of infiltration along the Indo-Bangladesh border, emphasizing the urgency for enhanced security protocols to deter such activities effectively.
