After India’s independence, Thakur was elected as an MLA in 1952 and held this position for almost the entire time, except when he served as a Member of Parliament in 1977.
In 1967, he became Deputy Chief Minister in Bihar’s first non-Congress government, the Samvidhan Government, noted for its ideological diversity. Thakur also served two tenures as Bihar’s Chief Minister (1970-71 and 1977-79). His notable contributions included reforms in education—abolishing the compulsory English language requirement in high school exams, which significantly reduced dropout rates and improved educational access for students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds, especially girls.
He was well-respected across political lines for his Gandhian values of simplicity and unwavering dedication to the common people. Thakur worked tirelessly against inequalities, focusing on empowering disadvantaged groups, including Dalits, backward castes, and women.
