Empowering Dialogue: Rijiju Dismisses Dictatorship Claims, Champions Negotiation on Siang Project
ITANAGAR, 23 Jan: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister and MP from Arunachal, Kiren Rijiju, addressed several pressing issues in an exclusive interview. Concerning the Siang upper multipurpose project, Rijiju emphasized the importance of addressing local concerns before commencement. He underscored the necessity of consultation with affected communities, noting the strategic significance of the project given China’s plans to build a massive dam upstream. Rijiju expressed confidence that public apprehension would diminish once economic benefits are clarified.
Dismissing rumors of Chinese backing for the United Tani Army (UTA), Rijiju urged its members to surrender, highlighting the success of the government’s policy encouraging Northeast militants to reintegrate. On the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978, and its recent propelled implementation, Rijiju insisted on dialogue between religious factions to prevent conflict, stressing adherence to the court’s directives.
Regarding the slow-moving investigation into the APPSC paper leak scam, Rijiju invited youth to share inputs, though he commended the state government’s efforts thus far. Addressing accusations linked to the offspring issue, he called for protecting tribal identity through legal means, warning against unfounded allegations.
Rijiju heralded the frontier highway project—endorsed by PM Narendra Modi—as a transformative undertaking for Arunachal’s border areas. Despite the project’s monumental scope, Rijiju cautioned against compensation-related delays, urging residents to avoid inflating claims. He also mentioned the stalled East-West Corridor, hindered by compensatory and environmental hurdles.
Concerns about muscle and money power infiltrating student union elections were also voiced, with Rijiju labeling it detrimental to the state’s future. He praised Arunachal’s rapid growth, aiming for it to become the leading GDP state in the Northeast. Recalling his own rise from Naku village to cabinet minister, Rijiju expressed gratitude to his constituents for their enduring support.
