Unlocking Prosperity: Minister Heralds Spices Cultivation as a Game-Changing Income Source in Arunachal
Arunachal Pradesh’s potential to generate sustainable income through spice cultivation was highlighted by the state’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Nyato Dukam, during a recent buyer-seller meeting at the DK Convention Hall. He emphasized that with dedication, spice farming could become a thriving economic activity in the region. However, Dukam expressed concern over some farmers’ reliance on government subsidies, urging them instead to focus on developing sustainable livelihood strategies.
To support this transition, Dukam assured that the state government and the Spice Board would provide necessary aid, including subsidies, training, and market linkages. He underscored the importance of continuous guidance and the adoption of value-addition techniques to enhance the sector, along with ensuring robust market connectivity.
The meeting also featured insights from DM Barman, the Regional Deputy Director of the Spice Board, who praised Arunachal Pradesh for its significant role in spice cultivation. Notably, the state ranks as India’s second-largest cultivator of large cardamom, following Sikkim. Barman highlighted various initiatives implemented by the Centre and the Spice Board to support spice growers in Arunachal Pradesh and the broader Northeast region.
The event witnessed participation from over 80 farmers across Arunachal Pradesh and 10 firms from various parts of the country, all facilitated by the Spice Board. This gathering aimed to strengthen the spice farming community by fostering direct interactions between buyers and sellers, thereby enhancing market opportunities and empowering local farmers to capitalize on spice cultivation as a sustainable source of income.
