Urgent Rally to Unakoti: Congress Demands Crucial Embankment Repairs for Kailashahar’s Safety
The Congress party in Tripura has announced a “border abhijyan” or long march to the international border in Unakoti district, as revealed by MLA Birajit Sinha. This initiative aims to demand either the repair of an existing embankment or the construction of a new one to safeguard Kailashahar town from potential flooding.
During the winter session of the state Assembly, MLA Sinha highlighted concerns to Chief Minister Manik Saha about Bangladesh’s ongoing embankment construction near Tripura’s Rangauti area. Residents in Kailashahar are apprehensive about the state government’s sluggish response, fearing that the high-rise embankment by Bangladesh could result in the submergence of several areas in Kailashahar during the monsoon season.
MLA Sinha criticized the state government’s inaction and emphasized that the Unakoti district Congress committee is determined to prevent potential flood hazards by organizing the march on January 25. This movement is expected to mobilize thousands of citizens demanding immediate government action.
The demands are focused on repairing the old 40-year-old embankment or constructing a new one. Chief Minister Saha has submitted a detailed “ground report” with satellite images to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to Delhi, emphasizing Bangladesh’s construction activities.
Further adding to the urgency, Unakoti District Magistrate D K Chakma reported observing significant progress in Bangladesh’s embankment construction, indicating that portions have already been established on the ‘zero line’ of the international border. According to Chakma, such developments could obstruct the natural passage of floodwater to downstream areas in Bangladesh.
This planned march underscores the local community’s urgent plea for intervention from the state government and the Centre to avert potential flooding disasters in Kailashahar, emphasizing the critical need for protective measures against regional environmental challenges.
