The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is gearing up to tackle a major challenge as it embarks on an ambitious project to desilt and dredge the Vishwamitri river, which suffered extensive flooding last year. A significant hurdle is the relocation of around 300 crocodiles residing in the river, coinciding with VMC’s flood-mitigation plan to modify river channels and straighten certain sections. While officials argue that the crocodiles are resilient enough to withstand relocation, experts highlight the need for contingency plans to address potential disturbances to these and other local reptiles like monitor lizards.
On Tuesday, the Municipal Commissioner outlined a comprehensive three-phase plan addressing immediate measures before the monsoon and longer-term river rejuvenation efforts. Environmental clearances for the project have been secured; however, VMC awaits Wildlife Department approval to relocate the crocodiles, given their Schedule-I classification under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Vadodara district Deputy Conservator of Forests, Agneeshwar Vyas, emphasized that forest department involvement hinges on potential threats to the crocodiles, with the VMC proposed to leave certain nesting areas untouched. Plans include potentially moving crocodiles to rescue centers or temporary shelters if relocation becomes necessary.
Additional flood-mitigation efforts include straightening confluences with the Dadhar and Jambuva rivers, constructing a new buffer pond, enhancing stormwater drainage networks, and installing flood-warning systems. A special VMC meeting aims to finalize details and garner support for the project.
The proposal outlines increasing the river’s carrying capacity and implementing measures such as dredging, rainwater harvesting, and drainage diversion to avert future flooding risks. Municipal Commissioner Dilip Rana underscored the urgent need for consensus and efficient deployment of resources for a successful execution of this vital project.
