Remarkable Triumph: Zero Pig Deaths from ASF in Mizoram Since Jan 1 | Guwahati News
Mizoram Contains African Swine Fever, No New Pig Deaths Reported in 2023
As of January 1, Mizoram has reported no pig deaths or culling linked to African Swine Fever (ASF), a significant achievement noted by state animal husbandry and veterinary officials. This follows a noticeable decrease in both pig casualties and culling since November, with several incident-free days recorded by late December. The ASF outbreak, which has been affecting the region since March 2021, appears to be under control this year, yet caution remains. Officials are wary of a potential resurgence with the onset of warmer weather and pre-monsoon rains expected in February or March.
In response to the ongoing ASF threat, the state disaster management and rehabilitation department has allocated Rs 480 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the 2024-25 financial year. This funding is intended to compensate families who have suffered pig losses due to ASF. This financial support follows the classification of the ASF outbreak as a ‘state specific disaster’ on October 14 of the previous year by the state disaster management authority (SDMA), enabling the use of SDRF resources to aid affected pig farmers.
Since the first confirmed ASF case in the Lungsen village near the Bangladesh border on March 21, 2021, the outbreak has been devastating, with a total of 1,11,434 pigs either dead or culled. Over four years, ASF has resulted in the deaths of 62,761 pigs, with 49,267 culled. Last year alone saw 14,950 pig deaths and 24,117 cullings. Despite the current success in containment, vigilance remains crucial to prevent a future resurgence of the disease.
