Revival of Barren Lands in Pakyong Through ‘Field Day’ Initiative

Published: Saturday, Jul 27, 2024 10:00 IST | Last Updated: Saturday, Jul 27, 2024 04:28 IST

Pakyong (IPR): Following the directives of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Pakyong district officially launched a project aimed at revitalizing barren lands. The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the ADC (Dev) Pakyong Rural Development Department at Bengthang, Pacheykhani, seeks to promote agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry for a prosperous future.

The event began with traditional land blessing rituals led by Zilla Upadhayaksha Prabha Pradhan. Demonstrating sustainable agricultural practices, cattle were used to plough the fields, followed by millet sowing on the previously unproductive lands. ADC (Dev) Robin Pd Sewa expressed gratitude to the participants and underscored the Chief Minister’s vision for a ‘Golden Sikkim, Prosperous Sikkim.’

In line with this vision, every Friday from 10 am to 4:30 pm has been designated as ‘Field Day.’ On this day, government personnel from various offices, including all BACs, GPUs, and sub-division offices under the ADC (Dev) Pakyong Rural Development Department, will engage in cultivating unproductive lands around their offices. This effort is in coordination with the Agriculture & Horticulture Department of Pakyong district, furthering the goal of promoting organic farming.

Prabha Pradhan called for active participation in the initiative and thanked the Chief Minister for his forward-thinking approach. She emphasized that revitalizing unproductive lands is crucial for agricultural advancement and urged the community to embrace all forms of labor, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with the "My Tree, My Offspring" program, which promotes sustainable farming practices.

Dignitaries such as Dr. Anjala Pradhan, additional director AH&VS; Tshering Chopel Bhutia, additional director, Agriculture Department; Dr. Prerna Baraily, deputy director AH&VS; CS Limboo, BDO Pakyong; local panchayats; MGNREGA staff, and members of the public attended the event. Additionally, ‘Field Day’ was observed in Rangpo, showcasing collective efforts across the district to rejuvenate unused lands.
